This week we’re in Kiruna, Sweden attending the International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage (TICCIH) Congress. This year is the 50th Anniversary of the committee’s foundation in 1975 and Periscope is presenting its work on the adaption of Port Talbot Steelworks.
Port Talbot is the largest steelworks in the UK and has been a centre of manufacturing for a century. Steelmaking will remain on site via an electric arc furnace in a much reduced but less harmful capacity. The legacy of blast furnace operation is environmental destruction, unemployment and rusting industrial heritage and our work is seeking new methodologies of land recovery and material metabolism.
Our research will be published later in the year.
