The Art Box is a large scale art storage, public gallery and educational space. The brief required the consolidation of a number of existing artwork storage facilities into a single space which would be substantial enough to house the collection as it grows, this combined with workshops, outreach spaces, exhibition space and other public facing facilities including a cafe.

Our proposal was for a campus of buildings which could be easily phased to respond to the collection as it grew. We considered the building’s as hybrid typologies, half storage boxes and half gallery whereby the mechanics of the storage of the works would themselves form part of the spectacle. High level walkways and large glazed screens separated the public spaces from the collections.
